All hospital rooms are private at St. Mary's Medical Center.
Your hospital room has been planned for efficient medical and nursing care in a safe, comfortable environment. Each bed is designed for professional nursing care and probably is narrower and higher than the bed which you are accustomed to at home.
Many patients are now enjoying new hospital beds as a result of a generous gift in 2004 from St. Mary's Medical Center Foundation. These beds have many comfort and convenience features for patients, as well as for caregivers. The mattresses are pressure-relief, so they can be adjusted for patients at risk for skin problems. The beds can be adjusted into many comfortable positions, including a chair. Patients can still operate the bed for their own comfort, but many functions do require a nurse or other hospital employees, so ask for assistance.
The side rails on the bed are for your protection. Please do not lower the side rails - call your nurse to assist you. Your physician may request that you have assistance getting in and out of bed, so please call your nurse. Each hospital bed is equipped with a call bell system. Your nurse will instruct you on its use.
All inpatient rooms are equipped with direct telephone access. Upon being admitted to your room, you will receive the direct dial telephone for your individual room. This number may be given to family and friends. You will have access to make free local calls.
Television service is provided free of charge in all patient rooms. For special instructions and channel guide, please refer to the Guide to Patient Services located in your hospital room.
Mail is delivered daily except on weekends. Any mail delivered after your discharge will be forwarded to your home address. Please encourage the use of your full name to assure accurate delivery.
Newspapers and Flowers
Newspapers are available in the Gift Shop or may be delivered to your room upon request. Flowers are delivered to patient rooms as soon as they arrive. Flowers are not allowed in the intensive care units. They will be sent home with your family/friend or held for you until you are transferred to a nursing unit.
The Environmental Services staff is responsible for providing a clean and safe environment for patients. Your room is cleaned daily.
Wholesome, nourishing and well-balanced meals are an important part of your treatment and recovery. St. Mary's makes every effort to provide nutritious meals that are prepared according to your physician's orders.
In most instances, your first meal will be ordered in advance. You will, however, have the opportunity to choose the next day's breakfast, lunch and dinner from a variety of foods permitted on your diet plan. Occasionally your meal may be delayed if you are scheduled for a special test or treatment. Whenever possible, you will be served after your examination or test.
You may order a visitor guest tray to be delivered to your room when your own tray is being served. Requests for guest trays may be placed with the nurse on duty at least one hour in advance of the desired meal (24 hours in advance for holiday meals). An additional charge will be made for guest meals.
