Early detection is vital.
The experts agree, early detection is vital in treating breast cancer most effectively. Mammography is the best method for detecting breast cancer in its earliest stages, when the disease is most successfully treated and there are more treatment options. Mammograms can find 85 to 90 percent of breast cancers in women over 50, and can discover a tumor up to two years before a lump can be felt. In some cases, finding a breast tumor early may mean a woman can choose breast-saving surgery, and she may not need chemotherapy.
Screening
St. Mary's supports national guidelines that recommend that women undergo screening for breast cancer as follows:
-
Breast self-exams: Monthly
-
Clinical breast exams: Women in their 20s and 30s should have a clinical breast examination (CBE) as part of a periodic (regular) health exam by a health professional preferably every 3 years. After age 40, women should have a breast exam by a health professional every year.
-
Mammograms: Annually, beginning at age 40. The National Cancer Institute agrees that women in their 40s who are at average risk for breast cancer should have a screening mammogram every one to two years. In addition, the Institute says women who are at increased risk due to a genetic history of breast cancer, or who have had breast cancer, may need to get mammograms at an earlier age and more frequently.
Your Mammogram
Your mammogram will be performed by a specially certified and experienced female mammographic technologist who is sensitive to your needs and your privacy. Firm breast compression is necessary for mammograms of optimal quality. Every effort will be made to enhance your comfort.
We suggest that you schedule your mammogram at a time in your cycle when your breasts are the least tender (one week after starting menstruation). If you have found a lump, however, you should see your doctor immediately.
To help your mammogram proceed quickly and smoothly, on the day of the exam, do not use deodorant or powder in your underarm or breast area, and wear a two -piece outfit, as you will need to undress from the waist up.
