An estimated five million Americans suffer from chronic wounds.* Wounds are caused by a variety of medical conditions and sometimes they do not heal properly. Typically wounds that do not progress through the usual stages of healing or do not heal within 30 days are considered chronic wounds. Diabetic patients often acquire wounds as a result of poor circulation in the toes and feet. Elderly patients may suffer from vascular disease and therefore have wounds that will not heal and elderly patients sometimes suffer from pressure wounds due to immobility.
St. Mary’s Medical Center now offers a comprehensive Wound Care Center for patients with both acute and chronic wounds. Every patient and wound is unique and sometimes treatment may require the expertise of several medical specialties. At the San Francisco Wound Care and Reconstructive Surgery Center expert physicians work closely with one another to treat all types of wounds – pressure ulcers, venous stasis & diabetic ulcers, radiation wounds (breast cancer, melanoma, head and neck cancers), abdominal hernia and ostomy wounds, varicose veins, lymphedema, osteolmyelitis and ulcers.
