Why Choose St. Mary’s for Your Total Joint Replacement?
With nearly 150 years of experience, St. Mary’s Medical Center has earned its reputation for delivering high-quality, personalized healthcare. In the early 1970’s it became one of the first Bay Area hospitals to provide total joint replacement surgery. Since then, we’ve been on the leading edge by offering smaller incision surgeries, the most advanced techniques and materials, and operating suites with a Laminar air flow.

Over 10,000 Total Joint Replacements
Our orthopedic surgeons are fellowship-trained total hip, knee, shoulder, ankle and elbow specialists with over 100 years of combined experience. With over 10,000 total joint replacements in over thirty years, our expertise is unsurpassed in both primary and more complicated replacement surgeries.

Our total joint surgeons have developed innovative techniques to reduce dislocation rates. They’ve been involved in the design and development of six total hip prostheses. What’s more, our surgeons stay sharp and focused with a high volume of specialized surgeries. Studies have shown that patients treated by high volume experienced surgeons have fewer complications.

Every Room is Private
Our new Total Joint Center on the 7th floor is now open to ensure a calm, unified, and specialized environment for your recovery. Every room is private with our dedicated rehabilitation area just a few short steps away. Our multidisciplinary team includes anesthesiologists, OR staff, floor nurses, and rehabilitation therapists—all specialists who are committed to providing you with outstanding medical care. In addition, an on-site physician assistant is there to address any needs you’ll have during your stay.

Latest Techniques Help Restore Function Quickly
Our surgeons use implants made from state-of-the-art materials that have the potential to last a lifetime while minimizing the need for replacement surgery down the road. And if needed, custom devices can be molded. Of course we’re familiar with a variety of implant materials and will thoroughly discuss which components are right for you. Smaller incision surgery with soft tissue preservation is used for each patient to minimize the trauma of surgery. These latest techniques help ensure early and rapid mobility to restore function quickly and safely. Computerized navigation tools are often used in complex cases to ensure surgical accuracy. We also use newer anesthetic and cell technologies to minimize or eliminate the need for a blood transfusion. This allows us to perform replacement surgery for people who are unwilling or unable to accept blood transfusions.

Comprehensive Accelerated Healing Program
Our accelerated healing program was developed to improve your overall wellness and experience with relaxation techniques, massage therapy, aromatherapy, and biofeedback. This holistic approach may minimize the need for narcotics in the post-operative period. This is part of our multimodal pain management program that includes PhD and MD specialists who will collaborate to develop a pain plan just for you. At St. Mary’s, we’ll have an open dialog to address your concerns, preparation, anesthesia, nutrition, physical therapy, and recovery. We also offer a special class designed to answer all of your remaining questions. We believe in empowering through education.
