Faculty:
V. Ruth Schulenberg
is a Certified Supervisor with the Association for Clinical
Pastoral Education, Inc. She is ordained and endorsed
through the Independent Christian Churches/Churches of
Christ. Professional interests and experiences have included
volunteer police chaplaincy with the Pierce Co., Washington,
Sheriff's Department; children's and youth ministry; hospital
chaplaincy; ministry to international students; and research and
writing on topics related to grief and loss. Her M.Div.
thesis, from the Emmanuel School of Religion in 1995, was
titled "Pastoral Care of Bereaved Children."
Ruth's hobbies include scrapbooking,
rubberstamp card-making, watching movies and independent films,
ballroom dancing, and playing with her two dogs, Parker and
Pal. Originally from western Oregon, her education and career
have taken her to east Tennessee, western Washington, Philadelphia,
southern Colorado, Texas, and now to San Francisco.

Tom
Harshman is affiliated with the Christian Church
(Disciples of Christ) and has been an ordained minister since
1983. He was born in Glendale,
California, and (in addition to California) has lived in Colorado;
Washington, DC; Salzburg, Austria; and
Texas. Tom holds a B.A. degree in
psychology from the University of Redlands and a M.Div. degree from
the Iliff School of Theology. He is a Supervisor with the
Association for Clinical Pastoral Education and a board certified
chaplain with the Association of Professional Chaplains who has
served in psychiatric hospitals, acute care hospitals, chemical
dependency facilities, and HIV service
organizations. Currently the Manager of Spiritual
Care and Mission Integration at Sequoia Hospital, Tom serves on the
Ethics Committee, chairs the Ethics, Rights and Responsibilities
Work Group, oversees Advocacy, Interpreter, and Ecology efforts,
and assists with developing the Community Benefit Plan. Beyond the
hospital, Tom is a member of the honor society for landscape
architecture and President of the Board of the Mental Health
Association of San Mateo County. Tom enjoys triathlons, landscape
design and travels frequently with his partner with whom he
lives in San Francisco.
Doug Lubbers is the Manager of Spiritual Care
and Interpretive Services at Saint Francis Memorial Hospital. A
certified ACPE Supervisor, he also directs Saint Francis' Clinical
Pastoral Education Program. Doug has been ordained by the
Presbyterian Church, USA, since 1981 and is a board certified
chaplain with the Association of Professional Chaplains. He grew up
in Texas, Michigan and Colorado. Doug holds a B.A. degree from the
University of Colorado and a M.Div. degree from Princeton
Theological Seminary. From 1981 to 1996, he served as a local
church minister in four congregations in New York, Los Angeles, and
Dallas-Fort Worth. He has extensive chaplain
experience in Pediatric Trauma, Intensive Care Units, Liver
Transplantation services, PGI and Pediatric Psychiatry
services. Prior to coming to Saint Francis,
Doug previously worked at two clinical educational settings: Scott
and White Medical Center, Texas, and Children Medical Center of
Dallas. Doug enjoys swimming, drawing, photography, travel and
loves to play guitar with his adolescent son.

Michelle Kirby is a
Supervisory Candidate at Saint Francis Memorial Hospital. She is an
ordained minister of the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan
Community Churches (UFMCC). Michelle has a BA from the University
of California, Davis, with a double major in Evolution and Ecology
and Religious Studies, and an M.Div. from the Pacific School of
Religion in Berkeley.
Prior to her ministry in the UFMCC, Michelle
served in the United Methodist Church for several years as a
full-time pastor, student minister, Sunday School coordinator, and
lay volunteer. In college, she spent four years working as a camp
counselor at Pilgrim Pines (UCC) Summer Camp in Yucaipa,
California. Currently, Michelle is active with the Metropolitan
Community Church of San Francisco, where she regularly leads
worship, heads the liturgical arts team, and sings in the choir.
Michelle also enjoys quilting and crochet, exploring urban stairway
walks, and a good cup of coffee. She lives in Oakland with her
giant fluffy cat, Friday.
