The Medical
Staff
The Physicians of St. Mary's Medical Center are leaders in their
fields, many nationally recognized. The physician who admits you
will direct your care while you are in the hospital. Your physician
will direct all the tests and medications and will coordinate
special procedures with other physicians. St. Mary's Medical Center
has a medical education program and therefore interns and residents
may accompany your attending or primary care physician.
The Nursing
Staff
A registered nurse coordinates your ongoing care around the clock.
Registered nurses may be assisted by licensed vocational nurses
(LVN) or certified nursing assistants (CNA).
Case
Management
Case managers are nurses or social workers that help you plan for
your hospital discharge needs. They are aware of your insurance
coverage and will help to ensure that your benefits are
appropriately utilized. They will assist you and your family in
making arrangements for care you may need after your
hospitalization. If you would like to speak with a case manager,
ask your nurse for assistance.
Social
Services
Social workers are professionals who help patients and families in
a time of crisis. They help make arrangements for non-medical care
after patients leave the hospital and can connect patients,
families and friends with community resources and referrals. If you
would like to speak with a social worker, ask your nurse for
assistance.
Financial
Advisors
Financial advisors verify all insurance coverage on each admission.
If you qualify for government programs, financial advisors can
assist with the application process and are knowledgeable about
eligibility for such programs. Financial advisors also evaluate
hardship cases and can access funds for qualified patients. To
contact a financial advisor please call (415) 750-5817.
Patient
Relations
If you have a compliment, concern, complaint or question about the
care or treatments you are receiving while you are hospitalized,
please contact the manager of your unit or the Patient Relations
Department. Each staff member of the hospital is responsible for
responding to patients' questions and concerns. To speak with a
patient relations representative, please call (415) 750-5789.
Patient
Transporters/Escorts
Patient escorts are responsible for safely bringing you to other
departments for tests, therapy and other procedures and returning
you safely to your room. They may also assist you as you leave the
hospital.
Volunteers
We are very proud of the hundreds of volunteers working throughout
the hospital. They provide valuable assistance to help make your
stay as pleasant as possible.
Other Members of
the Health Care Team
During your stay you may be visited by many other health care
professionals, including personnel from the laboratory, dietary,
radiology and therapy departments. In addition, the hospital
includes many behind-the-scenes workers, such as accountants,
engineers, secretaries, food service workers and others who
contribute greatly toward your well-being while you are here.
All hospital personnel wear identification
name badges and should introduce themselves and explain what they
are doing before starting any procedure. Do not hesitate to ask for
identification and information if you do not know who someone is or
what he or she is doing.
